FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Philadelphia, PA - May 31, 2009 - Dalet Gallery, a new addition to the Old City art community, announced the
opening of its first exhibition, "Scent of a woman". The exhibit will feature the works of Valera Iskhakov, Gregory Perkel,
and Leo Vayn. Opening reception will take place on June 5th from 6pm to 9pm.
For painter, sculptor, theater designer, and ceramicist
Valera Ishkakov, forging forward through the unknown forms
the basis of his ongoing creative process: "What seemed like great missteps were like crashes on a racetrack, from which
I recovered and continued to move forward. I was forced to grow tainted with learning, to realize the impossibility
of certain things, destroy it all, give it up, and at the same time bring myself back in order to find my own nature. I
had to come to the edge and jump into the darkness". His portraits encapsulate an emotional depth in deep, rich paint.
A prolific artist,
Gregory Perkel has worked in paint, sculpture, and mixed media, utilizing materials as varied
as cardboard, in exploratory, finely thought out and modulated ways. His current series of nudes on paper
works to create a private sensuality within a post-modern mixed media format. For Perkel, "nudes are an essential part
of my artistic expression. Following traditions of great masters of nude drawings in Modern Art, such as, Egon Schiele,
Pierre Matisse and Pablo Picasso, I work to develop a new sense of sexual sensuality through the personal touch of line
to paper".
Leo Vayn realizes his long-standing passion for photography with his new show at Dalet Gallery. As a photographer,
Vayn explores the way in which the inanimate becomes living in the eyes of the observer: "Man made objects and nature
become convenient representative "actors" for cracking-up the human inner world, and showing states of emotion, dreams, and
anxieties". Within Vayn's creative process, he enjoys the act of dissecting a feeling into smaller elements, and subsequently
putting together an image from them. His current photo series of outdoor studies reflect an interest in hidden clues and
unexpected details.
As a new gallery in Old City,
Dalet Gallery strives to contribute to contemporary dialog in a multi-faceted and playful
way that emphasizes and explores channels of communication between artists and viewers. Our focus spreads across mediums,
from painting, sculpture, and photography, to interactive and installation work. What interests us is the exploration of
contemporary questions through a personal, originally presented narrative. Our gallery program will include special events,
such as performances, speakers, and workshops.
